2020 Stroke Play Championship: Pine Tree GC/The Breakers (Ocean Course)/Old Marsh GC – December 7-9, 2020:

We could not be more excited to host our 2020 Stroke Play Championship at one of the most desired destinations in all of Florida. During our stay from December 7-9, our members will take part in championship golf at Pine Tree Golf Club, The Ocean Course at The Breakers and Old Marsh Golf Club. We will also retreat each evening to five-star accommodations at The Breakers nestled in Palm Beach.

Here is more information about what our members have to look forward to in December.

THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH

Founded by Henry M. Flagler on the sands of Palm Beach in 1896, this premier oceanfront hotel earned its name by its proximity to the water and unique location—right at “the breakers,” where the waves crashed and sprayed.

Over the years, the resort has drawn a guest list that reads like a “who’s who” of early 20th-century America: Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan, vacationing alongside US presidents and European nobility.

A defining moment for the property came in 1926 when The Breakers reopened following devastating fires. What emerged was a renovation with a higher degree of European influence and architectural flair. The Breakers today stands as one of the most luxurious and relaxing resorts in the world.

PINE TREE GOLF CLUB

Our first day of golf will take us to Pine Tree Golf Club, which was built in 1960s by Dick Wilson on what was then a large tract of dairy farmland in Boynton Beach. In 1962, just one year after opening, Pine Tree Golf Club hit the headlines after Ben Hogan declared that it was the greatest flat course in America.

More than forty years later, Pine Tree Golf Club remains prestigious, traditional and still represents a precise challenge and is considered to be one of Wilson’s finest designs. Bold, irregularly shaped and thoughtfully positioned bunkers are the hallmark of the course.

Despite the flat topography it’s a strategic test that asks serious questions of even the best golfers. To wit, over the course of Pine Tree’s history, its members have won more major golf championships than the members of any other golf club. Their collective total is 50 and includes golf greats such as Sam Snead, Tommy Armour, Gary Woodland, Mickey Wright, Louis Suggs, Karrie Webb, and Meg Mallon, to name just a few.

OCEAN COURSE AT THE BREAKERS

During our second day of golf, our members will compete on what is considered Florida’s oldest golf course which underwent a full-scale renovation by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones in late 2018. Inspiring players of all levels, the course offers an extraordinary golf experience that honors its heritage and seaside location with contemporary playability.

Inheriting the original layout designed by Alexander H. Findlay in 1897, Jones’ makeover of the Ocean Course took inspiration from The Breakers’ philosophy of balancing preservation and modernization.

A rich variety of contours, shapes and depths, along with all new salt-tolerant grass and unique water features, help bring the Ocean Course to an exciting and challenging new level. According to Jones, “every hole has a different little twist and different set of details.” Beckoning talent from near and far, players will be charmed with manicured landscapes and an occasional glimpse of the Atlantic.

OLD MARSH GOLF CLUB

Both on and off the course, Old Marsh Golf Club strives to preserve the essence of the sport and the land it’s played on. Nestled among 456 acres of pristine Florida wetlands, Old Marsh is a secluded sanctuary just 20 minutes away from Palm Beach International Airport.

The Pete Dye-designed, 18-hole championship golf course offers 7,000 yards of superb golf, TifEagle grass greens, and breathtaking views. Pete Dye drew on his vast experience as a golf course designer, as well as his experience as an international amateur golfer, to create a course that is both challenging for the finest golfers and enjoyable for the players of all skill levels.

In 2016, the golf course was renovated and, naturally, the project was overseen by Pete Dye and the Dye family. The pristine wetlands and wildlife remain untouched and preserved to this day, and in its first year of eligibility, Old Marsh was ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.
